The Heritage Palace in the Middle of Complex
Taman Sari Yogyakarta is a former palace of Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat Palace which is now used as a tourist spot. This garden which has an area of more than 10 hectares was built during the time of Sultan Hamengkubuwono I (first) still in power.
There are 57 buildings in this garden, such as bathing pools, suspension bridges, water canals, and artificial lakes. Some other buildings such as buildings, underwater aisles, and artificial islands can also be enjoyed when visiting here.
Judging from its extensive area, the Taman Sari Yogyakarta can be divided into 4 major main parts. The first part is an artificial lake in the west direction. The second part is on the south side of the artificial lake, the Umangun Umbul Bath
Meanwhile, the third part just south of the second part is the Garjitawati and Ledok Sari ponds. The fourth part is an extension of the east of the first and second parts including artificial lakes, suspension bridges and canals.
From the four sections of the Taman Sari Water Palace, now there is only one part whose building is still intact. The building is Umbul Binangun Bathing which is said to be the place of the royal Queen's baths. Meanwhile, the other three parts have been used as settlements for the courtiers of the Kraton Yogyakarta.

- Umbul Pasiraman Bathing (Umbul Binangun)
The most popular tourist rides at Taman Sari are Umbul Pasiraman Bathing. As the name suggests, this place is a bathing place for the Sultan's family, which is for concubines and daughters.
Therefore, the shape of the building is surrounded by high walls to maintain the privacy of the royal family. Umbul Pasiraman has three pools, namely Umbul Pamuncar, Umbul Panguras and Umbul Binangun. The pools have fountains in the form of dragon heads and can be accessed through the west and east entrance gates.
- Pulo Kenongo
Want to see the beautiful sunset that descends from the skyline of the enchanting city of Yogyakarta? Pulo Kenongo is the place, an island in the middle of the artificial lake of the Taman Sari complex.
On the island stands Gedhong Kenongo, the tallest building in the Yogyakarta Palace where visitors can see Yogyakarta from a height. Formerly this building had a dual function as a place where the Sultan ate food and as an enemy reconnaissance tower.
- Underwater Mosque
One other uniqueness of Taman Sari Yogyakarta is the Underwater or Underground Mosque. How is it not unique? The mosque's walls are made of bricks which are glued together not with cement but egg white. To get to the underground mosque, visitors live past a two-story gate like a tower.
Inside the mosque there is a well that has five stairs around it. It has meaning about the number of five pillars of Islam which also amount to five.
- Gedhong Gapura Panggung
In the Taman Sari Complex which in fact is a Portuguese-style building, snake reliefs can be found along the walls. Taking pictures against the background of these snake reliefs can be an Instagramable photo material for visitors.
The wall where the relief is located is part of a two-story building called Gedhong Gapura Panggung. As the name suggests, the gate, this building serves as the main entrance to enter the Taman Sari Yogyakarta complex.
Formerly, this building was the place where the Sultan could enjoy the view of Taman Sari which was still equipped with beautiful flower gardens and artificial lakes. A place that is still strong today is also the place where the Sultan often enjoys gamelan music and dance. This place is also a private place of the Sultan and his wives to decorate themselves and change clothes.
- Pull Cemethi
South of Pulo Kenongo, there is Pulo Cemethi, which means a place to meditate. Yes! This place is the place where the Sultan meditates, arranges war strategies, cleanses the kris, and stores weapons and armor.
In front of this place there are guesthouses that are often used by soldiers to practice war. Visitors can reach Pulo Cemethi by walking along the underground tunnel first.
- Gedhong Temanten
Gedhong Temanten is a building located to the east of the Gapuro Gedhong Stage. It is said that Gedhong Temanten had a very important function when the Mataram kingdom was in power.
How come! This building is the first upholstery of the kingdom, the first guard of the palace guards. Visitors can use this spot as an attractive spot to be photographed with family and friends.
- Gedhong Sekawan
East of Umbul Pasiraman or Umbul Binangun there is a large courtyard called Gedhong Sekawan. This place was once a large courtyard where there were four buildings standing on it. Its main function is where the Sultan rests or fatigue after carrying out royal duties.
- Summer Gumming
One interesting spot to be photographed when visited is the Gumuling Well, which is in the form of a circular niche. This well is not like a well in general, because in the middle of the well there are five ladder steps which indicate five pillars of Islam. Four of the five stairs go up and meet all in the middle while the fifth ladder connects the four to the second floor.
